Daniela Berti a obtenu un doctorat en ethno-anthropologie à l’Université de Sienne (soutenue à l’Université de Florence), et une ’Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches’ (2021, Université Paris Nanterre). Ses recherches ont d’abord porté sur les logiques d’interaction et de procédures d’interprétation dans différents contextes rituels en Inde - consultations oraculaires et astrologiques, rituels brahmaniques et tantriques. Elle a aussi étudié les implications politiques que ces cadres rituels peuvent parfois entraîner - en particulier en ce qui concerne les fêtes royales, l’iconographie rituelle ou l’écriture du passé.
Depuis une dizaine d’années ses recherches ont porté sur l’ethnographie des milieux judiciaires indiens. Elle a mené des recherches dans divers tribunaux de district de l’Himachal Pradesh (Kullu, Mandi, Shimla) sur des affaires criminelles - culture du cannabis, trafic de drogue, problèmes liés à la caste et à la dot - et, plus récemment, sur des affaires liées à l’environnement et aux droits des animaux. Elle effectue son terrain actuellement au National Green Tribunal à Delhi, où elle suit des affaires relatives à la conservation des espèces, et au Wildlife Institute of India à Dehradun (Uttarakhand), où elle étudie comment les biologistes évaluent la connectivité des forêts et surveillent le mouvement des populations animales produisant ainsi une expertise qui est utilisée dans le cadre des litiges.
