As Kham never existed as a politically independent territory or as an administrative entity, one of the main issues that needs to be taken into account when mapping this region is the way we are to define its boundaries based on other criteria (cultural, linguistic, ethnic, etc.). Even though some geographers, such as Gruschke in The Cultural Monuments of Tibet’s Outer Provinces (2004, map 5) or Ryavec in A Historical Atlas of Tibet (2015, map 4), have proposed approximate borders for the Kham cultural area, the definition of its clear demarcation with other cultural areas of Tibet and with China still remains an open question and no agreement has so far been reached. Given the current state of research, it would appear reasonable to not focus on its exact geographical limits but to represent the region with a large “buffer zone” (Kham and neighbouring regions) to leave the door open for a consensus that might emerge at the end of our research programme.
