Research topics
After having been introduced to South Asian ethnology via Olivier Herrenschmidt’s course at Université Paris X Nanterre as part of my DEUG in history and technology, I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Indian studies at Université Paris III, notably with a course in Sanskrit taught by Marie-Claude Porcher, a course in Hindi taught by Nalini Balbir, and a course in Indian art history and religions taught by Bruno Dagens.
My subsequent stay of several years in Nepal made me aware of the question of the vitality of Himalayan cultures : I therefore devoted my Master’s dissertation in language sciences (Rouen) to the situation of Garhwali in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, choosing to do my fieldwork in Dehradun.
And lastly, my doctoral thesis in language sciences at Université Rouen-Normandie (Dylis EA7474) focused on the religious and linguistic vitality of the Buddhist Newar of the Kathmandu Valley (2017). My supervisors were Gérard Toffin (CNRS-CEH) and Salih Akin, I defended my thesis before a committee of examiners made up of Annie Montaut (CNRS, INALCO), Philippe Cornu (INALCO, Université Catholique de Louvain) and Foued Laroussi (Université de Rouen-Normandie).
As the cross-fertilization of sociolinguistic and ethnological methods experimented during my research has proved valuable, my interests now lie in interdisciplinary approaches to cultural vitality, in particular the interactions between religion, language and modernity in South Asia and Upper Asia, associated with a necessary historical perspective.
