Academic and professional background
Pia Bailleul is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Himalayan Studies, where she studies the development of rare earth exploitation in Greenland within the framework of the ANR "Ruling on nature : animals and the environment before the Court".
This research is a continuation of her doctoral dissertation entitled "National deposits and common lands : a study of the legal, geological and political reconfigurations of the treatment of Greenlandic soils and subsoils based on the ethnography of the Kuannersuit mining project", conducted between 2017 and 2022. This work focuses on land’s processing, occupation and exploitation regimes in Greenland and the influences of the mining industry in their evolution. For this study, Pia Bailleul focused on the political and social issues generated by a zinc, rare earths and uranium mining project for the Kuannersuit site, a mountain located in southern Greenland (Kujalleq region), carried out since 2007 by the Australian company Greenland Minerals. She emphasized the central role played by this project in the ambition of achieving economic independence from Denmark, the former colonial state, but also in the development of the large-scale mining industry. The project accompanied a general reform of land rights and mining activities in the territory, transforming centuries-old mining practices. This phenomenon is intertwined with the political period that Greenland is going through, the stateization and ownership of land and resources.
Pia Bailleul also looked at the effects of the project on the target area, the town of Narsaq and the village of Qassiarsuk (Kujalleq region). She highlighted an economic and spatial competition for Kuannersuit, as well as a diffuse movement of revision of territorial practices. These practices are contained in the inuit concept of nuna, which means territory, land and country, and relate to the way in which the territory is inhabited, exploited and transmitted between generations and occupants. Through its productivist and political characteristics, the mining project breaks these links and founds a new norm of exploitation.
Since 2016, Pia Bailleul has been conducting fieldwork in Nuuk, the capital, and in several South Greenlandic towns and villages such as Narsaq, Qaqortoq, Qassiarsuk and Nanortalik. She speaks Kalaallisut, the national language of the country.
